Where are we now in the Environmental Assessment process?

The Application Information Requirements (AIR) outline the issues to be addressed in the assessment and the information that the proponent must include in the Application. KGHM Ajax submitted the AIR in April.  Since then, the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEA) has be reviewing the completeness of the AIR.  This has taken longer than expected, while the EAO and the CEA Agency have been engaging deeply with the Stk’emlupsemc te Secwepemc (SSN) on aspects of the document specifically related to Aboriginal Interests.  This resulted in some necessary additional changes to the AIR/EISG that were recently resolved.

What is the next step?  The proponent must finalize all studies, and has indicated they hope to submit the Application for screening by early fall.  The Application must contain all the information set out in the AIR in order for EAO/CEA to formally accept it. The screening is conducted by EAO, the CEA Agency and the Technical Working Group. The  EAO and the CEA Agency must decide whether the Application contains the required information in order to be accepted for review.
